Batuan temple

Pura Batuan, also known as Batuan Temple, is one of the oldest and most well-preserved temples in Bali. Located in Batuan Village, Gianyar Regency, about 30 minutes from Ubud and Denpasar, this temple is a remarkable example of traditional Balinese Hindu architecture and spiritual life. Founded in the 10th century, around the year 944 Isaka (1020 AD), Pura Batuan remains an active place of worship for the local community while also welcoming visitors who wish to experience authentic Balinese culture.

The temple is dedicated to the Hindu trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — and reflects strong influences from ancient Balinese kingdom traditions. As you enter the temple grounds, you are immediately greeted by a beautifully carved split gate known as “Candi Bentar,” decorated with intricate stone reliefs and traditional guardian statues. These carvings depict mythological creatures, floral patterns, and spiritual symbols that represent protection and harmony.

One of the most striking features of Pura Batuan is its detailed stone craftsmanship. Nearly every surface of the temple structures is covered with fine carvings, showcasing the artistic skills of Balinese artisans. The layered shrines (Meru towers) with black palm-fiber roofs rise gracefully within the inner courtyard, creating a dramatic and sacred atmosphere.

The temple follows the traditional Balinese layout, divided into three courtyards symbolizing the spiritual journey from the outer world to the sacred inner space. Visitors can explore the outer and middle courtyards, where they can admire shrines, ceremonial pavilions, and historical relics. The innermost courtyard is reserved for worship and special religious ceremonies.

Pura Batuan is also famous for its unique temple festival decorations. During important Hindu ceremonies, the temple becomes vibrant with colorful offerings, bamboo penjor poles, and traditional music. If you are lucky to visit during a temple festival (odalan), you can witness local villagers dressed in traditional attire participating in prayers and rituals.

The peaceful ambiance of the temple makes it a wonderful place to learn about Balinese spirituality and architecture. Unlike some larger temples, Pura Batuan maintains an intimate and authentic atmosphere, allowing visitors to feel connected to local religious traditions.

Because it is an active temple, visitors are required to wear a sarong and sash as a sign of respect. These are usually provided at the entrance with a small donation. The temple is surrounded by traditional village life, and many travelers combine their visit with nearby attractions such as Tegenungan Waterfall or local art galleries.
