Bratan lake temple

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, often called the Bratan Lake Temple, is one of Bali’s most iconic and picturesque water temples. Located in the cool highlands of Bedugul, about 1.5–2 hours from Denpasar or Ubud, the temple appears to float gracefully on the calm waters of Lake Beratan. Surrounded by misty mountains and lush gardens, this sacred site offers a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with Bali’s coastal destinations.

Built in 1633 by the Mengwi Kingdom, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Hindu goddess of water, lakes, and rivers. The temple plays an important role in Bali’s traditional subak irrigation system, which sustains rice farming across the island. Because of this cultural importance, the temple is not only a tourist attraction but also a vital spiritual center for local communities who depend on water for agriculture.

The most famous feature of the complex is the elegant 11-tiered meru tower that rises from a small islet on the lake. When the water level is high, the temple appears to float — creating one of the most photographed scenes in Bali. In the early morning, light fog often drifts across the lake, adding a magical, almost mystical atmosphere that photographers love.

The temple complex itself is part of the larger Bedugul Botanical Garden area, featuring beautifully maintained lawns, colorful flower gardens, and walking paths. Visitors can enjoy a relaxed stroll through the park-like surroundings while taking in views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The cool mountain climate (typically 18–24°C) makes it a refreshing escape from Bali’s tropical heat.

Besides the main water temple, the area offers several visitor-friendly facilities including boat rentals on the lake, traditional Balinese photo spots, and scenic viewpoints. Families, couples, and cultural travelers all find the site enjoyable because it combines natural beauty with historical and spiritual significance.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is especially popular as part of a Bedugul day trip, often combined with visits to the Handara Gate, Wanagiri viewpoints, or Jatiluwih rice terraces. Morning visits usually provide clearer views and fewer crowds, while late afternoon offers softer light and a romantic lakeside ambiance.
