Gunung Kawi temple

Gunung Kawi Temple is one of Bali’s most unique and historically rich ancient temple complexes, located near Tampaksiring in Gianyar Regency, about 30–40 minutes north of Ubud. Surrounded by lush jungle, rice terraces, and the flowing Pakerisan River, this sacred archaeological site is famous for its monumental rock-cut shrines carved directly into the cliff face. Visiting Gunung Kawi offers travelers a peaceful and immersive journey into Bali’s ancient royal history and spiritual heritage.

Dating back to the 11th century during the reign of King Anak Wungsu of the Warmadewa dynasty, Gunung Kawi is believed to have been built as a royal memorial complex. The site features ten massive candi (shrine monuments), each standing about 7 meters high, carved into the natural rock walls along the river valley. According to local belief, these shrines honor the king, his family members, and royal concubines. The impressive craftsmanship and scale of the carvings make Gunung Kawi one of Bali’s most important archaeological treasures.

To reach the temple complex, visitors must descend approximately 300 stone steps through a scenic pathway lined with rice fields, coconut trees, and small village stalls. While the walk down is relatively easy, the climb back up can be physically demanding, so comfortable shoes and good hydration are recommended. Along the way, visitors can enjoy beautiful panoramic views and experience the tranquil atmosphere of rural Bali.

The temple area itself is divided by the sacred Pakerisan River. On both sides of the valley, you will find the ancient rock-cut shrines set dramatically into the cliff walls. The peaceful sound of flowing water and the surrounding jungle create a mystical ambiance that feels far removed from Bali’s busy tourist areas. Unlike some of Bali’s more crowded temples, Gunung Kawi often feels calm and less commercial, making it ideal for travelers seeking a more authentic cultural experience.
