Penglipuran Village is one of the cleanest and most well-preserved traditional villages in Bali, located in Bangli Regency, about 45 minutes from Ubud and around one hour from Denpasar. Famous for its traditional Balinese architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and strong cultural values, Penglipuran offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience authentic village life that has been carefully maintained for generations.
The name “Penglipuran” comes from the Balinese words pengeling (to remember) and pura (temple or ancestral place), reflecting the village’s deep connection to heritage and ancestors. Established more than 700 years ago, the village follows ancient Balinese customs and layout principles rooted in Hindu philosophy. The village is arranged in a straight, symmetrical pathway stretching from the main entrance up toward the village temple. On both sides of the stone-paved walkway, you will see identical traditional houses with beautifully designed gates known as angkul-angkul.
One of the most striking features of Penglipuran is its cleanliness. The village has received recognition as one of the cleanest villages in the world due to its strict environmental rules and strong community cooperation. Motor vehicles are not allowed inside the main village area, which helps maintain its quiet and pollution-free atmosphere. Visitors can comfortably walk along the central path, explore the traditional compounds, and observe daily life activities such as offerings preparation and family ceremonies.
Each family compound follows the traditional Balinese house structure, consisting of several small pavilions arranged according to sacred spatial rules. Many residents open parts of their homes to visitors, allowing guests to see the layout and learn about Balinese customs, family temples, and ancestral traditions. The village also has a sacred bamboo forest located behind the residential area, which adds to the cool and natural ambiance.
Penglipuran Village is not just a tourist attraction but a living cultural community. Local residents continue to practice traditional ceremonies, temple rituals, and community gatherings. During religious festivals, visitors may witness colorful decorations and traditional Balinese attire, making the experience even more special.
