Sangeh monkey forest

Sangeh Monkey Forest is a peaceful and culturally significant nature attraction located in Sangeh Village, Badung Regency, about 30–40 minutes from Ubud and roughly one hour from Denpasar. Known for its sacred nutmeg forest and friendly long-tailed macaques, Sangeh offers a quieter and more relaxed alternative to Bali’s more crowded monkey sanctuaries.

The forest covers approximately 14 hectares and is dominated by tall pala (nutmeg) trees, some believed to be hundreds of years old. According to local legend, this forest is considered sacred and protected by the surrounding community. The name Sangeh itself is often associated with the idea of “someone who stops and looks,” reflecting the forest’s tranquil and contemplative atmosphere.

Sangeh is home to several groups of Balinese long-tailed monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Compared to more famous monkey forests, the monkeys here are generally known to be calmer and less aggressive, although visitors should still follow safety guidelines and avoid carrying visible food. The monkeys roam freely throughout the forest, creating excellent opportunities for natural wildlife photography.

At the heart of the forest stands Pura Bukit Sari, an ancient Hindu temple built in the 17th century during the Mengwi Kingdom. While the inner temple area is reserved for worshippers, visitors can admire the traditional Balinese architecture from the outside and feel the strong spiritual atmosphere that surrounds the site. The temple plays an important role in local religious ceremonies and is considered one of the sacred guardians of the forest.

Walking through Sangeh is a relaxing experience. Wide, shaded pathways wind through the towering nutmeg trees, creating a cool microclimate even during hot days. The forest is well maintained, clean, and easy to explore, making it suitable for families, couples, and older travelers who prefer light walking rather than steep trekking.

Because Sangeh is less commercialized than some other monkey attractions in Bali, the environment feels more natural and authentic. Visitors can take their time strolling, observing monkey behavior, and enjoying the peaceful sounds of the forest. Local guides are available at the entrance and can accompany visitors to ensure safe interaction with the monkeys while sharing interesting cultural information.
