Sekumpul Waterfall is widely considered the most spectacular waterfall in Bali. Located in the village of Sekumpul in Buleleng Regency, North Bali, this breathtaking natural wonder is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive from Denpasar, Ubud, or Canggu. Surrounded by lush jungle valleys and towering cliffs, Sekumpul offers one of the most dramatic and rewarding waterfall experiences on the island.
Unlike single-drop waterfalls, Sekumpul is actually a collection of multiple waterfalls — typically seven streams — cascading down a steep, forested cliff. The name Sekumpul means “a group” in Balinese, perfectly describing the cluster of waterfalls that flow side by side. Two of the tallest streams plunge approximately 70–80 meters straight down, creating a powerful mist and thunderous sound that can be heard long before you see the falls.
The journey to Sekumpul is part of the adventure. Visitors must descend hundreds of steps, cross small rivers, and walk through tropical jungle paths to reach the base. The trek usually takes around 30–45 minutes one way, depending on pace and chosen route. Although moderately challenging, the path is well worth the effort, offering stunning valley views, rice terraces, and dense greenery along the way.
When you finally arrive at the base, the sight is truly unforgettable. Massive curtains of water crash into a rocky basin below, sending cool mist into the air. The surrounding cliffs are covered in vibrant green plants and vines, creating a dramatic natural amphitheater. During the rainy season, the water flow becomes even more powerful, making the scenery more intense and photogenic. In the dry season, the falls are still impressive but slightly calmer.
Swimming is possible in certain shallow areas near the base, but visitors should always exercise caution due to strong currents and slippery rocks. Many travelers simply relax, take photos, and enjoy the raw beauty of the environment. Sekumpul is less commercialized than many southern Bali waterfalls, giving it a more authentic and untouched feel.
There are typically two route options available: a shorter viewpoint trek or the full waterfall trek that takes you down to the base. The full trek provides the most immersive experience and is highly recommended for adventurous visitors.
