Taman Ayun temple, Badung

Taman Ayun Temple, located in Mengwi Village, about 30 minutes from Ubud, is one of Bali’s most elegant and well-preserved temple complexes. Built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Putu, this temple served as the royal family’s place of worship. The name Taman Ayun means “Beautiful Garden Temple,” perfectly describing its serene setting surrounded by wide lotus-filled moats and lush gardens.
The temple’s layout reflects the traditional Balinese architectural style, divided into three courtyards symbolizing different levels of spiritual meaning. As visitors enter through the grand gate, they are welcomed by intricately carved statues and well-maintained pathways leading to the inner sanctum, where multi-tiered shrines (meru towers) stand gracefully. These shrines are dedicated to various Hindu gods, representing harmony between humans, nature, and the divine.
Taman Ayun is part of the Subak cultural landscape, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its connection to Bali’s traditional irrigation and water temple system. The calm atmosphere, scenic surroundings, and historical value make it a must-visit destination for culture lovers and photographers alike.
Visitors can also learn about Balinese temple architecture, rituals, and royal traditions through information boards placed around the complex.
