Tenganan village

Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, commonly known as Tenganan Village, is one of the most unique and culturally significant traditional villages in Bali. Located in Karangasem Regency in East Bali, about 20 minutes from Candidasa, this ancient settlement is home to the Bali Aga people, the original inhabitants of Bali who maintain traditions that existed long before the arrival of the Majapahit Kingdom in the 14th century.

Unlike many other Balinese villages, Tenganan has preserved its original customs, architecture, and way of life for centuries. The village follows strict traditional rules and cultural practices that continue to guide daily life for its residents. Walking through Tenganan feels like stepping back in time, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Bali’s ancient heritage.

One of the most distinctive features of Tenganan Village is its unique layout. The village is organized in a symmetrical structure with long stone pathways and rows of traditional houses on both sides. The houses are built with red brick walls, wooden doors, and thatched or tiled roofs, reflecting the architectural style of the Bali Aga culture. The peaceful environment and orderly layout make it pleasant to explore on foot.

Tenganan is especially famous for producing Geringsing textile, one of the rarest traditional fabrics in the world. This sacred cloth is created using a complex double ikat weaving technique that exists in only a few places globally. Geringsing fabric is believed to have protective spiritual powers and is often used in important ceremonies and rituals. Visitors can watch local artisans weaving the fabric by hand and learn about the intricate process that can take several months or even years to complete.

Another highlight of Tenganan Village is its rich cultural ceremonies and festivals. One of the most famous is the Mekare-kare or Pandan War Festival, held annually as part of a traditional ritual honoring the god of war, Indra. During this event, young men engage in ceremonial battles using thorny pandan leaves as weapons while protected by traditional shields. The festival attracts visitors from around the world who wish to witness this extraordinary cultural tradition.

Aside from its ceremonies and crafts, Tenganan also offers a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by hills and nature. Visitors can enjoy walking through the village, interacting with friendly locals, exploring small handicraft shops, and learning about traditional Balinese customs that have been preserved for generations.
