Tirta empul temple

Tirta Empul Temple is one of Bali’s most sacred and culturally significant Hindu temples, located in the village of Manukaya near Tampaksiring, about 30 minutes north of Ubud. Famous for its holy spring water used in traditional purification rituals, this temple attracts both Balinese devotees and international visitors seeking spiritual experience and cultural insight. Built in 962 AD during the Warmadewa dynasty, Tirta Empul remains an active place of worship and an important part of Balinese Hindu life.

The name “Tirta Empul” means “holy water spring,” referring to the natural spring that feeds the temple’s purification pools. According to Balinese legend, the spring was created by the god Indra to restore life to his poisoned soldiers. Today, the sacred water continues to flow crystal clear into a series of stone bathing pools where visitors can participate in the traditional melukat purification ritual. This ritual is believed to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit from negative energy.

The temple complex is divided into three main courtyards. The outer courtyard (jaba pura) serves as the entrance area and gathering space. The middle courtyard (jaba tengah) contains the famous purification pools lined with 30 water spouts, each with specific spiritual significance. Visitors wearing proper attire may enter the pools and follow the traditional bathing sequence. The inner courtyard (jeroan) is the most sacred area, where ornate shrines and temple structures are used for prayer ceremonies and are generally reserved for worshippers.

One of the most memorable experiences at Tirta Empul is participating in the purification ritual. Visitors typically rent a sarong and sash at the entrance (often included in the ticket) and may also rent a locker to store belongings. The process involves entering the pool, offering a short prayer, and rinsing under each designated fountain. It is important to follow local customs and respect fountains that are reserved only for Balinese ceremonies.
