Tirta gangga

Tirta Gangga is one of Bali’s most beautiful and peaceful historical sites, located in Karangasem Regency in East Bali. The name “Tirta Gangga” means “Water of the Ganges,” referring to the sacred river in India and symbolizing purity in Balinese Hindu culture. This former royal water palace was built in 1946 by the King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, as a place of relaxation, meditation, and spiritual reflection for the royal family.

The complex is famous for its elegant water gardens, tiered fountains, lotus ponds, and stepping stones that appear to float across crystal-clear pools. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and the backdrop of Mount Agung, Tirta Gangga offers a harmonious combination of nature, architecture, and spirituality.

As you enter the area, you are welcomed by large ornamental ponds filled with colorful koi fish. The iconic stepping stones arranged across the water allow visitors to walk gracefully through the pond while feeding the fish. This has become one of the most photographed spots in Bali. The calm reflection of statues and fountains on the water surface creates a magical and serene atmosphere.

The main fountain, an eleven-tiered structure rising in the center of the complex, is a highlight of Tirta Gangga. Water flows continuously from the top tier, symbolizing life and purification. Throughout the garden, you will also find traditional Balinese stone carvings and statues representing deities and mythical creatures, adding spiritual depth to the experience.

Beyond its beauty, Tirta Gangga is also a place of cultural significance. The water that flows through the palace is considered holy by local Balinese people and is often used for religious ceremonies. Visitors may observe locals collecting holy water for temple rituals.

One of the unique features of Tirta Gangga is the public swimming pools fed by natural spring water. Visitors can swim in these pools and experience the refreshing cool water directly from the mountain source. The water is clean and clear, making it a pleasant activity on a warm day.

The peaceful ambiance of Tirta Gangga makes it ideal for relaxation and photography. Early morning visits provide softer lighting and fewer crowds, allowing you to enjoy the gardens in tranquility. The combination of royal history, spiritual symbolism, and stunning landscape design makes Tirta Gangga more than just a tourist attraction — it is a living cultural heritage site.
